Arts Minister Opens Craft Month

Arts Minister Carál Ní Chuilín officially opened Craft NI’s new exhibition, A White, A Blue, A Yellow, Red Poetry by Jeremy Reed, as part of August Craft Month 2011.

At the opening of the event, the Minister said “The creative sector in the north of Ireland has the capability to contribute significantly to our economy and in attracting tourists to these shores. I welcome the opportunity to experience first hand the work of our local craft businesses and see for myself how they contribute to the creative sector as a whole."

The exhibition, entitled A White, A Blue, A Yellow, Red, is a touring exhibition and includes the work of five outstanding international craftspeople, including the jeweller Grainne Morton who is originally from Lurgan and is accompanied by poems from Jeremy Reed

During the launch the Minister viewed the works in glass, ceramics and jewellery from international names in contemporary craft. The pieces were all selected to be accompanied by poems from Jeremy Reed, who has published over 40 books of poetry, fiction and non-fiction, winning prestigious literary prizes like the Somerset Maugham Award.

Continuing the Minister said: “The creative industries are recognised across the globe for their potential for job and wealth creation and that is why my Department is investing £4million, through the Creative Industries Innovation Fund and other initiatives, over the next four years to support this key growth sector for the region.

In conclusion the Minister thanked everyone involved in supporting August Craft Month and Craft NI in bringing together the great number of events and activities on offer. She said: “I hope that the 2011 August Craft month programme will inspire people to learn more about the craft tradition and the many talented practitioners that we have here in the north.”
